Grades 3-5 iPad Projects
Puppet Pals Knock-Knock Jokes:
Students used the Puppet Pals app on their iPad to tell a knock-knock joke to the class. They visited the media center website and selected a knock-knock joke for their video. Then, they saved a picture from Pics4Learning or Photos for Class and used it as the background for their knock-knock joke. Students uploaded their selfies for their video. Students shared their jokes with the class. (1-2 class periods)
Biography Chatterpix:
In 3rd grade, students researched a famous person. They visited several websites on the media center website and took notes on the person’s childhood, family, and adulthood. They drew a colorful portrait of their person and then took a picture of it for their Chatterpix video. Students used the Chatterpix app on the iPad to create a 30-second video about their person. Students shared their videos with the class. (4 class periods)
Earth/Sun StopMotion Video:
In 3rd grade, we watched and discussed a YouTube video about how the Earth’s rotation and revolution influences day/night and seasons. Students used the StopMotion app on the iPad to create an animated and narrated video that showed how the Earth travels around the sun. To create their video, they used a sheet of black construction paper for the solar system, as well as colored and cut out copyright-friendly clipart of the sun and moon. Students used StopMotion’s microphone to record themselves saying the title, their names, and one fact about how the Earth travels around the sun. They shared their StopMotion videos with the class. (3-4 class periods)
Internet Safety E-Book:
In 3rd grade, we watched an Internet Safety video on YouTube. Students used the Story Creator app on the iPad to create a 5-page e-book that included a title page, closing page, and three ways to stay safe on the Internet (keep personal information private, create a strong password, change your password often, etc.). On each page, students typed the text, inserted an illustration of their Internet Safety tip, and added a sound recording. Students shared their e-books with the class. (4-5 class periods)
Cyberbullying Chatterpix:
In 4th grade, we discussed cyberbullying and ways to stop cyberbullying. We read aloud the book Bully by Patricia Polacco. Students visited several cyberbullying websites on the media center website. On a graphic organizer, they recorded the definition of cyberbullying, a cyberbullying statistic, three effects of cyberbullying, and two ways to stop cyberbullying. Students used their notes to write their script and create a 30-second Chatterpix video about cyberbullying. For their video, students saved a picture of an electronic device from Pics4Learning, as well as created a text box with a cyberbullying slogan such as “Stop Cyberbullying” or “Be a Buddy Not a Cyberbully.” Students shared their cyberbullying videos with the class. (4-5 class periods)
NC Lighthouse Green Screen:
In 4th grade, students researched one of seven lighthouses along the coast of North Carolina. They visited several websites on the media center’s website and gathered facts about their lighthouse’s location, history, and physical appearance. Students used the green screen app on the iPad to create a video about their lighthouse. They made a colorful drawing of their lighthouse for the background of their video. Students shared their videos with the class. (3-4 class periods)
Titanic StopMotion Video:
In 4th grade, we watched a YouTube video that recounted the sinking of the Titanic. Students used the StopMotion app on the iPad to create an animated and narrated video that showed the sinking of the Titanic in a respectful manner. To create their video, students colored and cut out copyright-friendly clipart (iceberg, Titanic, and water). They used StopMotion’s microphone to record themselves saying the title, their names, and “In memory of the 1,500 people who lost their lives on the Titanic.” Students shared their videos with the class. (3-4 class periods)
Human Body Chatterpix:
In 5th grade, students researched one of six human body systems. Students used library books and e-books on Big Universe to find information about the function and parts of their human body system. Students also drew a colorful diagram that showed the location of their body system, as well as the organs and body parts involved in their body system. Students used the Chatterpix app on their iPad to take a picture of their human body system diagram and create a 30-second video about their body system (with their drawing in the background). Students shared their videos with the class. (3-4 class periods)
Green Screen Poem Presentations:
In 5th grade, students worked with a partner to write two original poems: a quatrain and a cinquain. For their video, they drew a colorful picture or selected a and then took pictures of their drawings for the backgrounds of their green screen presentations. Students used the DoInk green screen app on the iPad to record themselves reading their poems. Students shared their green screen videos with the class. (3 class periods)
Green Screen Book Reviews:
Students selected a library book and wrote a book review. They used the DoInk green screen app on the iPad to create a video about their book. Students used their iPad camera to take a picture of the book’s cover for the background of their green screen presentation. They shared their green screen book reviews with the class. (2 class periods)
Sock Puppets Book Reviews:
Students selected a library book and wrote a book review. They used the Sock Puppets app on the iPad to create a video about their book. Students used their iPad camera to take a picture of the book’s cover for the background of their green screen presentation. They shared their Sock Puppet book reviews with the class. (2 class periods)
Poetry Show with iMovie:
With a partner, students wrote an acrostic poem and a diamante poem. Students used three of more of the following apps to create a Poetry Show with iMovie: PicKids, Shadow Puppet, Chatterpix, StopMotion, Puppet Pals, Sock Puppets, or Green Screen. Students shared their Poetry Show videos with the class. (4-5 class periods)
Voki Book Reviews:
Students selected a library book and wrote a book review. They used the Voki app on the iPad to design a talking avatar and to create a video about their book. Students used the iPad camera to take a picture of the book’s cover for the background of their Voki video. They shared their Voki book reviews with the class. (2 class periods)
Water Cycle StopMotion Video:
In 5th grade, we watched a YouTube video to learn about how the sun impacts the water cycle. Students used the StopMotion app on the iPad to create an animated and narrated video that illustrated the stages of the water cycle (evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, and run-off). Students shared their videos with the class. (3-4 class periods)
